Ballet? That's right!"A ballerina takes steps given to her and makes them her own. Each individual brings something different to the same role," Maria Tallchief once said. "As an American, I believe in great individualism. That's the way I was brought up." Maria Tallchief, an Osage Indian, left her home in Oklahoma to become the prima ballerina of the New York City Ballet. After many years of hard work and success, both in ballet and in promoting Native American culture and arts, Tallchief received a special honor from her home state. She was given the honor name of Wa-Xthe-Thomba, meaning "Woman of Two Worlds" in recognition of her remarkable achievements. |
