The historian talks about how it was sometimes calm in Rainy Mountain. Also very bad weather; and how there was always wind. Momaday talks about his grandmother’s house and a storm cellar nearby. How he thinks it will last longer than his grandmothers house. He also talks about how he saw a grown man get thrown by the wind. This summer I had a job detasling. It was pretty easy for what I thought it would be like. Except for one day. It was storming real bad. There was a lot of lightning. At first they didn’t want us to go. Then the weather cleared up a little; so they had us go anyway. When we went there the weather was worse than before. So they had us go to a warehouse for shelter. We stayed there for about three hours. They said that we were getting paid to stay in the warehouse. Our boss went out to buy us ponchos. By the time he got back the rain had already cleared. He said we should wear them anyways so the corn does not get us drenched. They finally thought it was time to go and get started working. It was terrible the rain had made a lot of mud that globed up on your shoes. You would also sink really far down in the mud. We were running behind because we had stay in the warehouse so long so we had to go really fast in the field. We were exhausted. Everybody was barley able to get on to the bus. When we got to our pick up place my mom was at work. So I had to walk around town until someone would let me use their phone. I had some friends pick me up until my mom was able to come and get me. Through all time there has been storms. There has been bad ones and good ones. Just like the Kiowas, we have struggled with storms. |
